An Introduction to Dr. Mark Wood

At Wake Orthopedics, Dr. Mark Wood's focus is on sports medicine and the diagnosis and treatment of knee and shoulder injuries and disorders. As an expert in youth sports overuse and ACL injury prevention, NCFC Youth is fortunate to have him as a medical advisor. Dr. Wood serves as a Team Physician Supervisor to our Athletic Trainers, our COVID-19 Task Force Medical Director, and NCFC Youth board member.

"Injury prevention and safe return to the sport has been a passion of mine for many years," says Dr. Wood. His dedication to injury prevention in youth sports and the community is prevalent in his work at NCFC Youth. Over the years, he facilitated a partnership between WakeMed, Wake Ortho, and NCFC Youth, resulting in three Wake Ortho Athletic Trainers committed to NCFC Youth every day of the week to extend care and coverage for our players. Dr. Wood also works closely with Head Athletic Trainer Jason Bailey to create players' post-injury return to play plans.

Dr. Wood explains the "injury prevention programs consist of simple exercises that target specific muscle groups and have been shown to decrease ACL tears, overuse, and other common injuries by up to 67%." He elaborates by saying, "The protocol is based on published research evidence that confirms a safe return to sport after injury depends on allowing adequate time for healing."

Understanding a player's need to have sports in a daily routine is something Dr. Wood realizes from his personal life. All three of his kids play sports, so injury prevention is "near and dear" to his heart, he says. His passion for youth sports shows his desire for a player's return post-injury, and his expertise allows him to make crucial protocol decisions. This skillset used in injury prevention, coupled with his connections to WakeMed Health & Hospitals and expert colleagues, is used to create policies for our club's return to the fields during COVID-19.

Dr. Wood is a valuable resource that helps NCFC Youth's COVID-19 Task Force craft phases for a safe return to the fields. Over the past few months, Dr. Wood's insights gathered from evolving CDC recommendations, government and healthcare resources, and a team of local physician experts inform our safety protocols and allow us to progress efficiently with the state's phases.

To the Task Force, Dr. Wood's expertise is vital in understanding how to evaluate COVID cases and the possible exposures to minimize the risk of transmission to other coaches and teammates. He had a direct hand in creating "Direct Exposure" protocols, flow charts, and action plans for contact tracing, mandatory quarantines, COVID testing requirements, and medical return to play clearance necessary for our return to the fields. Dr. Wood's contribution will be essential as we continue to monitor and adapt protocols and procedures through the fall season. In addition, to Dr. Wood's Medical Advisor, we are excited to have him as the newest member of our board as he'll continue to provide valuable input, not only from as a medical standpoint but from his experience as a father, ties with the community, and passion for youth sports.
