Challenge FAQs

Do I have to register for Challenge Try-outs?

All players new to the Challenge program must register and attend try-outs.

Players who played NCFC Challenge last year/season (aka veterans) do not have to register for try-outs if they want to return to their same team.
Veteran players who want to be placed on a new Challenge team must register and attend try-outs. These players will be removed from their previous roster and placed in the try-out pool of players. Only players who register and attend tryouts can be drafted by coaches.

You must create an account first in order to register.

If I am a Recreation player and I try-out for a Challenge team and am not chosen, will I be able to return to my current Recreation team?

Yes, as long as you register for Recreation soccer by the Guaranteed Placement deadline and choose "return to previous team".

Please do not register for Recreation soccer until you hear from the Challenge staff after the Challenge try-outs. Do not register for Challenge try-outs AND Recreation soccer. Just register for Challenge try-outs, and we will communicate with you further.

If you are not selected to a Challenge team from tryouts, you will need to complete the Recreation registration for your child to participate in the Recreational program for the upcoming season.

Players who registers for Challenge tryouts and are not selected to a Challenge team WILL NOT automatically be registered for a Recreational team. Families will be notified if their child has or has not made a Challenge team prior to the Early Bird Recreation Registration Deadline.

Early Bird Recreation Registration Deadline is TBA
Guaranteed Placement Recreation Deadline is TBA

For questions regarding Recreation, please contact  [email protected].

What is Returning Player registration and when is the deadline?

Returning Player registration is only for players who played NCFC Challenge in the most recent season their age group was active. If you register for returning player registration you must have played NCFC Challenge the previous year and you want to return to your same team. Returning players who register do not need to attend Challenge tryouts.

Playing NCFC Recreation, Juniors, or Classic does not mean you are considered Returning Challenge Player.

Returning Challenge Player registration deadline is Monday, May 20, 2019. No late registrations will be accepted. If you are a Returning Player and miss registration (whether it be unintentional or not) you must attend Challenge tryouts in order to be placed on a Challenge team.

When do Challenge teams train and play games?

Practices for 2011 (9U) - 2006 (14U)

  • Teams play in both the Fall and Spring seasons.
  • All teams train 2 times a week during the season; 22 sessions per season*
  • Head coaches submit a schedule request form via their SINC account to request practice days and times.
  • All 2011 (9U)  - 2006 (14U) age teams games may be scheduled on a Friday evening, or anytime on Saturday or Sunday (schedule permitting) with neither Saturday or Sunday being a challenge-specific scheduling day.
*weather permitting

Practices for 2005 (15U) - 2002/2001 (18U/19U)

  • Girls ONLY play in the Fall season. High school girls are welcome to participate in NCFC Recreational League for the Spring season.

  • Boys ONLY play in the Spring season. High school boys are welcome to participate in NCFC Recreational League for the Fall season.
  • All High School age teams train once (1) per week.  A second team practice can be requested to the Scheduler once all other NCFC playing division practices have been scheduled.

    Second Practice:
  • High school aged teams are only given one practice a week to ensure maximum attendance at practice. Coaches may request a second practice night.
  • The second practice request will have no fee associated with the request for the additional High School age team practice.  NCFC will do their best to accommodate 2 practice requests.  However, 2  practice requests are not guaranteed and are based on field and day availability.
  • Scheduled Eight (8) regular season games within the NCFC Challenge Scheduling league

All U15-U19 High School age teams will have 8 regular season games within the NCFC Challenge Scheduling League. Games scheduled primarily on Sunday afternoons.

Does Challenge have required training attire?

All Challenge players are required to wear the NCFC Blue Training Top at all training/practices. Navy/Black Shorts and Navy/Black Socks should be worn to training, we recommend adidas shorts and socks.

All Challenge players will receive information on the new NCFC Challenge uniform kit from their team managers after tryouts. Families will receive an email from SOCCER.com to order uniforms once the team and players are submitted and created in the Soccer.com team database. The 2019-2020 season is the first year in our next 2-year uniform cycle with Adidas.

When do we get our game and training schedule?

Practice times, field locations, and game schedule will be released in August for the Fall season and in February for the Spring season. Practice schedules are released through our NCFC scheduling department.

Where do Challenge teams train/practice and play games?

Coaches request their training dates and times, as they are volunteer coaches. Teams will practice in their chosen location: Raleigh, Wake Forest, Cary, Holly Springs or Durham/Chapel Hill. Games are played in all the different areas with home games being in the home team's training location.

Challenge Practices are set up within the region your team is in. Your practice will always be in your region, however it may not be next door. Please be aware you are committing to a higher level program than Recreation. For example, if you designate Raleigh as your home region, you may practice at one of many locations across the Raleigh area. Not all Raleigh Challenge teams practice at WRAL.

Do Challenge teams attend tournaments?

We encourage teams to attend 2-3 tournaments a season with discretion left up to the head coach and families. We encourage 10U-14U teams to attend 2 events a year, with the 3rd being Singer Cup or a tournament with 75% approval from the team.Teams should not attend more than 4 events a year (Fall and Spring combined).

  • 9U teams are not encouraged to attend events unless recommended by the Director.
  • 10U-18/19U teams should not exceed 3 tournaments during a calendar year (Fall and Spring combined).
  • Coaches that wish to attend more than the recommended number of tournaments (more than 3) or wish to attend out of state tournaments should consult their team prior to committing and/or registering for additional events.

When are 2020-2021 Challenge Tryouts?

High school girls will have tryouts for the Fall 2019 season in June 2019. (High school girls Challenge season is a Fall only league.)
High school boys will have tryouts for the Spring 2020 season in December 2019. (High school boys Challenge is a Spring only league.)

Our intent is to have Challenge teams at every age group and gender in Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest, Garner, Holly Springs, and Durham/Chapel Hill. Whether or not teams will be formed in each region depends upon try-out numbers and Director's discretion.

We expect players to attend all tryouts dates in order to receive a fair evaluation. All tryouts will be held at WRAL Soccer Park.
