Hurricane Florence Relief

Hurricane Florence Relief
Our neighbors across the state are still recovering from the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Florence. Thousands of people are displaced from their homes and relying on aid from relief organizations to cover their basic needs. NCFC Youth is launching a donation collection campaign to support the Diaper Bank of North Carolina and their relief efforts across our state.

Why the Diaper Bank of NC?

Recently, our staff volunteers at the Diaper Bank of NC (headquartered in Durham) and wrapped 33,000+ diapers to be distributed across the state. During our outing, we learned that the diaper bank fills a critical gap in the system as the only statewide diaper bank. During disaster relief, organizations like the Red Cross provide vital goods and services to areas in need, but there are no agencies that provide diapers. This is where the diaper bank comes in.

During disaster relief, the diaper bank partners with state emergency management officials to distribute kits (diapers, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products) directly to those in need. The diaper bank says that “populations who are already vulnerable, such as young children, low-income individuals, and the elderly, are especially hard hit by natural disasters.” If we can help victims of disaster fulfill their basic needs, they can focus on their recovery.

Here’s how you can help:
• Bring your donation to one of the designated collection nights between 5-8pm; look for the NCFC tent
• Thursday, 9/27: WRAL Soccer Park (Clubhouse; 5-8pm)
• Monday, 10/1: Triangle Day School (5-8pm)
• Monday, 10/1: Middle Creek (7-8:30pm; volunteer: Joan Pegram; location: picnic area)
• Tuesday, 10/2: Middle Creek (5pm-8pm; location: picnic area)
• Tuesday, 10/2: WRAL Soccer Park (Clubhouse; 5:30-8pm; volunteer: Parisa Ledesma)
• Wednesday, 10/3: Thomas Brooks Park (Shelter area; 5-8pm)

• Volunteer your vehicle to take some of the collection to the Diaper Bank (located in Durham): simply sign up here to let us know you are interested, then check in at the tent area before you leave to see if the collection is large enough to need your vehicle (the Diaper Bank is open daily from 10am – 2pm).

• Volunteer to set up a collection at another NCFC Youth practice site and date not already listed between now and Friday, 10/5. If you or your team is interested, email [email protected] so we can make sure other families/teams know and get it added to the website.

Items Most Needed:

- Diapers (sizes 4 & 5 is the most needed but all sizes welcome)
- Feminine hygiene products (tampons, pads, etc.)
- Toilet Paper
- Additional items to donate include baby wipes & pull-ups (2T-3T)

About the Diaper Bank of NC
The Diaper Bank of NC primarily collects and distributes more than 200,000 diapers a month state-wide through branches in the Triangle, the Greater Triad, and the Lower Cape Fear Region. In addition to diapers, the Diaper Bank also collects and distributes feminine hygiene products and adult incontinence supplies. Their goal is to relieve families of the stress of filling this basic need, so they can focus on other priorities. Public safety net programs (e.g., WIC, SNAP) do not cover the purchase of diapers, often leaving families with a difficult decision between buying diapers and other necessities with limited funds.

Sports Equipment Donations
In addition to our drive, don’t forget you can always donate your gently used sports (soccer and non-soccer) equipment to through the donation bin at WRAL Soccer Park. Many soccer players will be ready to hit the field once the waters recede, and some may be without their equipment due to Florence. Our partner, will be identifying organizations in the eastern part of our state to receive equipment supplies and donations. They have already sent one truck load down to Wilmington, and they will continue to send more as more areas of need are identified.
