Upcoming Coaching Education Opportunities


U.S. Soccer Coaching Education Courses

U.S. Soccer offers online coaching education courses for the entry level coach and for those coaches wishing to pursue the higher license – D, C and beyond. The philosophy of the courses is the player-centered approach of Play-Practice-Play, with the instructors taking the holistic approach of coaching education.

The U.S. Soccer’s Digital Coaching Center (DCC), a state-of-the art online educational platform. The DCC allows coaches to create a personal profile, register for courses, communicate with technical staff, take part in online courses, create session plans with an online graphics tool, access an archive of U.S. Soccer training sessions and much more.

Recreation Coaches Meeting and Education
Recreation Coaches should plan on attending the Coaches Meeting and Coaching Education on Saturday, August 3. Recreation Director, Andrew Tait, will address important changes, updates and information for the upcoming season. NCFC Youth Staff will demonstrate how to run a session, answer questions with regards to coaching, and be a resource for all experienced or new Recreation coaches. Both head coaches and assistant coaches are welcome to participate.

Challenge Coaches Meeting and Education

Challenge3 Coaches should plan on attending the Coaches Meeting and Coaching Education on Saturday, August 10.  Challenge Director, Brett Malone, will address important changes, updates and information for the upcoming season. NCFC Youth Staff will demonstrate how to run a session, answer questions with regards to coaching, and be a resource for all experienced or new Challenge coaches. Both head coaches and assistant coaches are welcome to participate.

USSF Coaching Education Courses Hosted by NCYSA at WRAL Soccer Complex

The following courses will be held at WRAL Soccer Complex for both Classroom and Field Sessions. All information pertaining to the course and all course work will be completed/communicated through the Digital Coaching Center (DCC).

Grassroots Course Information
Each In-Person course is a four-hour course that builds on the principles covered in U.S. Soccer’s Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module. Specifically, candidates will learn more about U.S. Soccer’s Grassroots Coaching Education Philosophy, Play-Practice-Play Methodology, the Six Tasks of a Coach, and the characteristics of players in their respective formats based on age. The course will also ask each candidate to reflect on their experiences to develop action steps for personal growth.

4v4 Format is for players who are 6-8 years old
7v7 Format is for players who are 9-10 years old
9v9 Format is for players who are 11-12 years old
11v11 Format is for players who are 13+ years old

Eligibility Requirements: To register for any Grassroots In-Person Course, candidates must complete U.S. Soccer’s Introduction to Grassroots Coaching module online via U.S. Soccer's Digital Coaching Center (DCC).

Each In-Person Grassroots Course consists of three parts:
  • One-hour classroom: content geared towards the coaches participating in the course with the methodology within the course title – meaning 4v4, 7v7, 9v9 or 11v11; an introduction to the Play-Practice- Play model

  • Two-hour field session: content geared towards the player-centered Play- Practice-Play model: where you the candidate will work with age appropriate players and receive feedback/reflection.

  • One-hour classroom: content geared towards the review/reflection on the field session and overall conclusion of the course

National D License Course Information
The National D license is a 40 to 45-hour course, held over two weekends, at minimum 4 weeks apart, designed for the grassroots coach who meets the prerequisites outlined below. The focus of this course is to facilitate the improvement of the candidates in the Six Tasks of a Coach across all four game models (4v4, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11) with an emphasis on Coaching Training Sessions. Candidates that register for this course are expected to attend both meetings.

Eligibility Requirements:A unique combination of three of the eight Grassroots Licenses now formally represent the prerequisite to progress to the U.S. Soccer D License. Specifically, candidates must have completed a minimum of three grassroots courses, in the form of two in-person courses and one online course:

Two in-person courses (one of which must be the 11v11)
One online course across any of the four levels (4v4, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11)


National C License Course Information
The C Course focuses on the core concepts of coaching.

Eligibility: In order to register for the U.S. Soccer C course, all candidates must meet the following pre-requisites:

  • At least 18 years of age

  • Have held a U.S. Soccer D license for at least 12 months -OR- meet the waiver guidelines
    Currently coaching

  • Interested candidates who wish to apply based on a waiver must submit an application directly to NCYSA.

Course Structure
The C course consists of two course meetings separated by a development period. The total course duration is approximately 2-3 months.

If you are a new coach, you will be able to pick up any training gear or equipment for the fall season in the fitness center at WRAL on August 4th.
If you are a coach from the previous season and you need some updated gear or equipment, please feel free to stop by and we can work with you to provide you with the right materials!

U5-U8 coaches will receive ball vouchers you will be able to give to your players for the fall season. Balls are not to be picked up until the first week of practices, August 13th!


Football Braining with Raymond Verheijen



This World Football Academy 1-day course, with special guest instructor Raymond Verheijen, will take place in Raleigh on Monday July 23, 2018, hosted at WRAL Soccer Park.

All-Women’s USSF Grassroots Coaching Course in the 7v7 format

The clinic will be hosted at WRAL Soccer Park on Sunday, August 19 from 4:00–8:00 PM
Bill Furjanic, NCYSA’s Technical Director of Coaching Education & Player Development, will be the lead instructor.

Email Mary Puckett at [email protected] to register and claim your code for the course. Course space is limited to 40 coaches – register early to guarantee your spot!

7v7 Format
Sunday, August 19
4:00 - 8:00 PM

The course will meet downstairs in the Clubhouse in the middle of WRAL Soccer Park.

No playing experience or previous coaching education needed. All course participants will be women. No testing involved; some pre-course work required to earn Grassroots license.

Completion of this course gives you a portion (1 of 2 steps) of the qualifications needed to get the USSF D License. The other being an in-person 11v11 Grassroots course. This is a great chance to start your coaching education journey!
